What did your body have to do to reach full draw?
Picture an evening practice session outside Carencro. The target is set, you have a little daylight left, and you want a few good shots before heading inside. But as you pull back, your shoulder creeps toward your ear, your chest lifts, and your lower back arches to finish the draw.
You got the bow back. But what did your body have to do to get there?
For hunters across Acadiana, that is a useful question to take into practice. Rather than judging a draw only by whether you can reach your anchor, consider how smoothly and consistently you can get there. Shoulder-blade control is worth paying attention to: studies of archers have found differences in trapezius muscle activity between skill levels and between archers with and without shoulder symptoms. What the shoulder blade contributes
The shoulder blade, or scapula, provides the socket for the upper arm and attachment points for muscles that move and support the shoulder. It needs to move with control—not remain frozen in one position.
The upper trapezius helps position the shoulder girdle. The middle and lower trapezius and serratus anterior help control the scapula, while the rotator cuff helps control the upper arm within the socket. These muscles work as a team; the lower trapezius is not a replacement for all the other muscles involved in drawing a bow.
A useful distinction is that the drawing side must coordinate the arm moving backward with scapular control, while the bow side must support the arm reaching forward. Treating both shoulders as though they should be squeezed tightly together misses those different jobs. This is a practical application of shoulder mechanics, not a single posture that every archer must copy.
Think controlled support, not shoulder blades clamped “down and back.”
Shrugging is not an on/off switch
The upper traps are the muscles many people associate with tension between the neck and shoulders. They have an important job. The concern is a pattern in which the hunter relies heavily on shrugging while the lower trapezius contributes less effectively to the task.
That pattern has been observed in archery research. A 2014 study of 30 male archers found that archers with shoulder impingement symptoms had more scapular elevation, higher upper-trapezius activity and lower lower-trapezius activity during shooting stabilization than uninjured archers. Their upper-to-lower-trapezius activity ratio was also higher. [1]
However, this does not establish that an overactive upper trap literally switches off the lower trap through reciprocal inhibition. These portions of the trapezius can cooperate in controlling shoulder motion. Other shoulder research has found increased activity in both portions in people with symptoms. The more accurate concern is altered recruitment and coordination—not an automatic on/off switch.
A separate study of 30 male archers found greater lower-trapezius activity during stabilization in elite archers than in less-skilled groups, along with lower biceps and triceps activity. That supports the importance of coordinated back and shoulder-blade involvement rather than treating the draw as an arm-only effort. It does not prove that one muscle, one exercise, or one cue creates elite shooting. [2]
The practical takeaway: do not try to eliminate upper-trap activity. Work toward a draw that does not depend on an exaggerated shrug.
Scapulohumeral rhythm is a model, not a bow-draw formula
You may have heard that shoulder movement follows a 2:1 ratio. That usually means approximately two degrees of movement at the ball-and-socket shoulder joint for every one degree of scapular upward rotation during arm elevation.
Written in the order scapula to glenohumeral joint, the traditional ratio is 1:2. The familiar simplified example is about 60 degrees from scapular upward rotation plus 120 degrees at the shoulder joint, producing approximately 180 degrees of overall arm elevation.
But this is a teaching model, not a fixed gear ratio. The relationship varies across the movement, between people and with the task. Drawing a bow also involves substantial movement across and behind the body—not simply raising an arm overhead. You should not try to measure out a 1:2 rhythm while drawing. [3]
For hunters, the useful lesson is simpler: the arm and shoulder blade need to move together. Stability does not mean immobilizing the scapula.
A movement-system perspective
Shirley Sahrmann, PT, PhD, professor emerita at Washington University in St. Louis, helped develop the movement-system approach described in works such as Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes. Her work emphasizes examining movement patterns and the ways repeated movement can contribute to a person’s symptoms. [4]
Applied to bowhunting, that perspective encourages a better question than “Which muscle feels tight?” Ask, “What movement strategy do I repeat every time I draw?”
That is an application of her broader framework—not a claim that Sahrmann established one correct bowhunting technique or developed a diagnostic test specifically for hunters.
Trunk control without rigid bracing
Your core cannot literally move upward. But the expression describes a recognizable coaching problem: trying to create stability by lifting the chest, tightening the neck and leaning backward rather than keeping the trunk controlled.
During practice, watch for your lower ribs lifting away from the pelvis, a growing arch in your lower back, or your torso moving backward to help finish the pull. Treat these as reasons to review your technique and resistance—not proof that you have an injury.
A useful rehearsal cue is: “Keep the ribs comfortably over the pelvis, stay tall without leaning back, and keep breathing.” The goal is not a rigid spine or a maximal abdominal squeeze. It is a stable-enough trunk that does not have to change position dramatically to complete the task.
Research on abdominal contraction during shoulder exercise is mixed and task-dependent. An earlier evidence synthesis found increased scapular-muscle activity in several dynamic exercises, while a 2026 study found minimal overall effects during prone scapular-retraction exercises. Bracing the abdomen is therefore not a reliable switch that automatically turns on the lower traps. [5] [6]
For a hunter, “use your core” is best treated as a movement cue—not a promise that one posture prevents shoulder injury.
An informal reach–roll–lift movement check
The reach–roll–lift is used as a scapular-control exercise and appears in rehabilitation literature. The version below offers a simple way to observe how you reach, rotate and lift an arm while limiting help from the trunk. [7]
Use this as an informal movement check, not a diagnosis. The practical observations below are not validated pass/fail standards for bowhunters, and this is not a clearance test for shooting or hunting.
- Set up. Kneel on a padded floor with your knees comfortably apart and sit your hips toward your heels. Lean forward, resting your forehead on one fist or your opposite forearm. Skip the position if your knees, hips or back cannot tolerate it comfortably.
- Reach. Slide the testing arm straight forward along the floor, palm down. Keep the elbow straight and your forehead supported.
- Roll. Gently rotate the extended arm so the palm faces upward. Let the rotation involve the shoulder rather than forcing it only through the wrist. Do not force the available range.
- Lift. Keeping the elbow straight, try to lift the hand and arm slightly clear of the floor. Hold briefly, then lower slowly. Keep your head supported and avoid lifting your chest, twisting or arching your back to create the movement.
- Compare. Try a few comfortable, controlled repetitions on each side. Observe how the movement happens, not just how high the hand travels.
Practical pass observation
For this informal check, a good-quality attempt means you can reach, rotate and produce a small lift without pain, bending the elbow or borrowing obvious movement from your trunk. Your head stays supported, your hips remain back, and you do not need a pronounced shoulder shrug.
The goal is not a dramatic lift. A small, controlled movement is more useful than extra height created by moving the rest of your body.
Needs-attention observation
Notice difficulty lifting without bending the elbow, lifting your chest or head, twisting, arching your lower back, or strongly shrugging. A clear side-to-side difference is also worth discussing with a clinician. Stop if it hurts.
A difficult attempt does not prove that the lower trapezius is weak or inhibited. Shoulder mobility, discomfort, setup and movement control can all affect the task. Likewise, performing it comfortably does not rule out a shoulder problem. The exercise literature does not establish it as a standalone diagnostic test.
Put the mechanics into practice
These are practical coaching applications, not a research-validated injury-prevention protocol. Start with a light resistance band or an unloaded movement rehearsal. A qualified archery coach can help apply the ideas to your equipment, anchor and shooting style.
Choose control over maximum poundage. Review draw weight and fit when you need a large shrug, a sudden jerk or a backward lean to complete the draw. Being able to reach full draw once is a different goal from controlling repeated draws and a deliberate let-down. World Archery guidance highlights the tradeoff between excessive draw weight and technique. [8]
Let the arm and scapula work together. Rather than yanking with the hand or jamming the shoulder down, rehearse a smooth drawing-elbow path with a comfortably positioned neck and controlled trunk. On the bow side, aim for a supported reach—not a shoulder blade forcibly pulled backward. Treat these as starting cues to individualize, not exact joint positions prescribed for every hunter.
Make the rehearsal relevant to your hunt. Once the basic movement is comfortable, ask your coach to review the positions you actually use, such as a seated ground-blind position. A smooth standing rehearsal does not tell you how your technique looks from every position. Observe those differences at a safe practice location, not for the first time when an animal steps out.
Never dry-fire a bow. A movement rehearsal is not permission to release a bowstring without an appropriate arrow. Follow your bow manufacturer’s handling instructions and use a safe shooting setup.
What targeted training evidence does—and does not—show
There is encouraging evidence for targeted training. In a 2020 controlled study, 31 elite archers completed an eight-week study of lower-trapezius-focused strengthening. The exercise group showed improvements in pain and several shoulder-function measures, along with a reduced upper-to-lower-trapezius activity ratio. [9]
That supports including lower-trapezius work when appropriate. It does not establish that the same program prevents injuries in recreational bowhunters or that every sore shoulder needs the same exercises.
Depending on the findings, a clinician might select lower-trapezius-focused raises or other scapular exercises, then progress toward the hunter’s actual task. The program should account for the whole shoulder and trunk rather than assuming the lower trap is the only issue. The archery training study used a progression over weeks—not a single activation trick before shooting.
When to seek an assessment
Persistent pain, pain at rest or at night, noticeable weakness, or loss of comfortable arm movement deserves an assessment. Sudden substantial weakness or significant pain after an injury warrants prompt medical attention. Shoulder pain can have several causes; a shrugging pattern or difficult reach–roll–lift cannot identify the cause by itself.

Evidence, limitations, and context
The main upper-/lower-trapezius pattern is supported by a small archery comparison study, but reverse causation remains possible: pain can change recruitment, and the study cannot show which occurred first. Surface EMG is not a direct measure of isolated muscle strength, and lower relative activity does not mean a muscle is neurologically shut down.
The elite-versus-less-skilled study supports an association with technique or skill, not proof that increasing one EMG signal improves every archer. The eight-week intervention adds practical support for progressive training but does not establish injury prevention or direct transfer to hunting conditions.
The 2026 abdominal-contraction study qualifies, rather than simply confirms, the earlier synthesis suggesting that abdominal engagement can increase scapular-muscle activity. The reach–roll–lift instructions are an adaptation of clinician exercise education.
